What is an Online Coaching Business?

An online coaching business is a coaching practice that's conducted primarily over the internet. Coaches use various online tools and platforms to deliver their coaching services to clients. The business can take many forms, such as individual coaching, group coaching, or online courses. When it comes to structuring an online coaching business, there are two main options to consider. The first is to operate as a solo coach. The second is to establish a team.

As a solo coach, you are essentially a one-person show. As the founder of your new business, you are responsible for all functionalities, including marketing your services, client acquisition, coaching delivery, and yes, administration. This also affords you full control over your business and the services you offer. You have the liberty to collaborate with clients according to your preferences and construct your coaching practice in alignment with your principles and aspirations.

On the other hand, building an organization means that you have the opportunity to scale your business beyond what you could accomplish as a solo coach. You can hire sub-coaches to work under your umbrella and either teach your methodologies, or come in with their own expertise, so you can offer a much more extensive package to more clients. You can also expand your offerings to include online courses, group coaching, live events and other services that may be beyond your individual capacity. So you need to make sure that your sub-coaches provide high-quality services to clients, so that they feel supported at all times.

Whether you choose to be a solo coach or build an organization, there are certain key elements that every online coaching business needs. First and foremost, you need a clear and compelling brand message that communicates what you offer and why clients should choose you over other coaches. You'll also need a published website that promotes your brand and displays your services, as well as a way for clients to get in touch with you for a sales or connection call.

You'll need to create and keep developing your marketing strategy to attract customers and grow your business over time as you go along. Marketing is always changing, and so are the tactics and strategies people reply to.

Overall, an online coaching business can be a highly rewarding and profitable venture. With the right combination of skills, dedication, and strategic planning, you can create a successful coaching practice that helps clients achieve their goals and transforms their lives for the better.

Who is an Online Coach?

An online coach is like a seasoned mountaineer, equipped with the tools and experience to guide their clients up life's steep and challenging peaks. With their expertise and guidance, they help clients navigate the rocky terrain, overcome obstacles, and reach new heights. Similar to a mountaineer who assesses their equipment and plans their route to ensure success, an online coach works with clients to create a personalized roadmap, complete with achievable goals and actionable steps to reach them.

Just as a mountaineer provides support and encouragement to their team members, an online coach serves as a cheerleader for their clients, offering feedback, guidance, and constructive criticism to help them grow and improve. They can help clients develop mental strength and resilience, empowering them to push past their limits and achieve their full potential.

Like a mountaineer who must be attentive and adaptable to changing weather and conditions, an online coach must be attuned to their client's needs and circumstances. They can help uncover the underlying factors that may be holding their clients back, digging deep to find hidden insights and perspectives.

Overall, an online coach is a trusted and experienced guide, helping clients navigate the twists and turns of life's journey and reach new heights of success and fulfillment.

However, narrowing down and focussing on one topic specifically will make you a successful coach much faster.

  2. Additionally, online coaching has the potential to produce passive income, similar to planting a tree where the initial effort generates benefits for years to come. By creating digital products like courses and ebooks, you can earn passive income while you sleep. This means that you can enjoy a steady stream of revenue without burning out or sacrificing your precious time.

  1. It’s time-efficient: Online coaching is like having a time machine - it lets you save time and get more done in less time. By eliminating the need to commute and prepare your office for clients, you can work from anywhere and at any time. This opportunity provides individuals with the chance to allocate additional time to loved ones and engage in personal interests. The demand for online coaching services is high, as they have the potential to positively impact people's lives, much like superheroes.

  1. It's a chance to share your passion and expertise: Online coaching is like being a chef - you get to share your unique recipe for success with the world. By tapping into a niche that you're passionate about, you can help others overcome their challenges and achieve their dreams. Sharing your knowledge and expertise with others can be a deeply rewarding experience that gives your life purpose and meaning.

How to start an online coaching business step by step guide

Knowing the Value You Provide

A successful coaching business is built on the value you provide to your clients. This means understanding your clients' pain points and offering a solution that will help them achieve their goals.

Imagine your coaching business as a garden. Just as a gardener takes time to understand the soil, climate, and plants in their garden to ensure healthy growth, as a coach, you must take the time to understand your clients' needs to help them achieve their goals.

By providing value, you're not only helping your clients grow, but you're also cultivating a loyal client base that will spread the word about your coaching services to others. In other words, your coaching business will blossom like a beautiful garden full of vibrant and healthy flowers. To create a successful business, prioritize the value you provide to clients. By doing so, you can fulfill your desire to help others while meeting their needs. If you're committed to nurturing your client base, starting an online coaching business could be an ideal venture for you.

Understanding Who Your Clients Are

Another key to success is understanding your target audience. This includes their demographics, needs, interests and deepest desires. By understanding your clients, you can tailor your services to meet their specific needs and increase your chances of success.

Just like a fisherman needs to know what kind of fish they want to catch and what bait they should use to attract them, as an online coach, you need to know who your ideal clients are and what motivates them.

If you're trying to catch trout with worms meant for catfish, you're going to have a bad time, and the same goes for coaching. You need to identify the people who will benefit most from your services and tailor your approach to meet their needs. I can’t stress this enough. This is the number one reason my clients struggle with when they first get started. It’s crucial for your success. Doing proper research to gain more understanding can not be skipped.

Once you understand your target audience, you can create a clear and compelling message that speaks directly to them, and use the right marketing channels to reach them effectively. By doing so, you'll be able to build a tribe of loyal clients who trust and value your services, and who will become your best advocates.

1:1 Coaching vs. Group Coaching

When starting an online coaching business, you'll need to decide whether you'll offer 1:1 coaching, group coaching, or a combination of both.

Choosing between 1:1 coaching and group coaching is like choosing between a one-person band and a full-blown orchestra. While 1:1 coaching allows for personalized attention and tailored guidance, group coaching can be like a harmonious symphony, where multiple clients benefit from the same advice and support. Group coaching can also be more efficient, allowing you to work with multiple clients simultaneously and maximize your time.

However, 1:1 coaching can provide a deeper level of connection with each client, like a solo instrumentalist that captures the essence of the music with each note. Ultimately, the decision between 1:1 and group coaching depends on your coaching style and the needs of your clients. A combination of both can also be a powerful strategy, offering the best of both worlds and catering to a wider range of clients.

I always recommend to focus on group coaching for two reasons:

  1. It’s very beneficial for others to be surrounded by like minded people that are on the same journey. Additionally, people will learn and benefits from other people’s questions as well.

  2. It’s scalable. You can have more people in your group at once. Whereas when you coach 1:1, you only have so many hours in a day.

Now let’s move on and talk about what are the key steps to launching a successful online coaching business.

Step 3: Identify your USP

Importance of your USP

To stand out in a crowded marketplace, you need to identify your unique selling proposition (USP). This is what sets you apart from other coaches and what makes your coaching services unique and valuable.

Having a clear USP is crucial for establishing a competitive advantage in the market. It helps potential clients understand why they should choose you over other coaches.

Without a USP, you risk blending in with the competition and losing potential clients. Your USP should be something that resonates with your target audience and effectively communicates the value you provide. It can also help guide your marketing and branding efforts to ensure consistency and differentiation.

Why you need to stand out in the marketplace

Standing out in the marketplace is important because it helps you attract clients and build a successful coaching business. When you have a clear USP, you can position yourself as an expert and communicate the value of your services to potential clients.

By standing out, you can create a unique identity and brand for yourself, making it easier for clients to recognize and remember you. Additionally, a clear USP can help you target your ideal clients and differentiate yourself from your competitors. This can ultimately lead to increased client satisfaction and loyalty, as clients will be drawn to your unique approach and the value you offer.

Examples of USPs

Some examples of USPs for coaching businesses include:

  1. Personalized coaching approach: One example of a USP is offering a personalized coaching approach, where the coach tailors their services to meet the specific needs of each client. This can include customized coaching plans, personalized feedback, and one-on-one sessions.

  2. Specific coaching methodology: Another USP is offering a specific coaching methodology, such as mindfulness-based coaching, performance coaching, or career coaching. This allows the coach to position themselves as an expert in their field and attract clients who are looking for a particular type of coaching.

  3. Focus on self-care and mindset: Some coaches have a USP focused on self-care and mindset, offering coaching services that help clients overcome limiting beliefs, build confidence, and prioritize their well-being. This can include coaching on mindfulness, meditation, and self-reflection.

  4. High-ticket sales and offers: A USP focused on high-ticket sales and offers can help coaches attract clients who are willing to invest in premium coaching services. This can include coaching packages that offer exclusive access, personalized attention, and high-level support.

  5. Including a software, done for you funnels and other marketing materials in your coaching package: A USP focused on providing marketing software for coaches and marketing material can attract clients who prefer the convenience and flexibility of “done for you” services. This is what I personally have been doing and it’s been working out very well.

Step 4: Identify the transformation you want to offer

Importance of the transformation

As a coach, your job is to help your clients achieve a specific transformation or outcome. This could be anything from improving their health and wellness to growing their business or improving their relationships. But, the transformation needs to be crystal clear and tangible.

When identifying the transformation you want to offer, it's important to have a clear understanding of your niche and target audience and where they are at in their journey.

This will help you tailor your coaching services to meet the specific needs of your clients and provide them with the transformation they're seeking. Additionally, identifying the transformation you want to offer will help you attract clients who are aligned with your coaching philosophy and approach.

It will also help you create a clear and compelling marketing message that communicates the value of your services and the transformation you can offer. By focusing on the transformation you want to offer, you can create a powerful and impactful coaching business that helps your clients achieve their goals and transform their lives.

If the results of your transformation are intangible, it can be challenging to measure progress, and this may result in your clients feeling dissatisfied or left behind.

How to identify the end result of your program

To identify the transformation you want to offer in your coaching program, it's important to start with the end in mind. This means thinking about the ultimate result you want your clients to achieve and working backward from there. By starting with the end in mind, you can create a clear roadmap for your coaching program that helps your clients achieve their goals.

Identifying “the end” might be a specific outcome, such as losing weight (very tangible), improving their relationships (saving a marriage from a divorce for example), or growing their business by adding an extra $100k/month to their revenue for example). Once you've defined the end result, you can start to work backward and identify the steps your clients need to take to achieve that result.

Next, consider the obstacles your clients may face along the way. This could be anything from limiting beliefs and mindset issues to external factors like lack of time or resources. By anticipating these obstacles, you can develop strategies and techniques to help your clients overcome them and stay on track toward their goals.

Ultimately, starting with the end in mind allows you to create a coaching program that is focused, results-oriented, and tailored to the needs of your clients. By defining a tangible end result and working backward, you can create a clear and effective roadmap for your coaching program that helps your clients achieve their desired transformation.

Here are some examples of coaching program transformations:

  1. Weight loss: helping clients lose a certain amount of weight or reach a specific body fat percentage.

  2. Confidence building: assisting clients in building confidence in themselves and their abilities. Measuring confidence building can be challenging, but here are a few ways to make it more tangible:

    • Self-assessment surveys: Ask clients to complete a self-assessment survey before and after working with you to measure changes in their confidence levels. These surveys can ask clients to rate their confidence in different areas, such as public speaking, decision-making, or assertiveness.

    • Goal-setting and tracking: Help clients set specific goals related to building confidence and track their progress towards achieving those goals. This could involve tracking how often they speak up in meetings, how many networking events they attend, or how many sales pitches they make.

    • Role-playing exercises: Use role-playing exercises to help clients practice new skills and behaviors that can increase their confidence, such as negotiating, giving presentations, or having difficult conversations. Evaluate their performance in these exercises to measure their progress over time.

    • Behavioral observations: Observe clients in real-world situations, such as during a job interview or a team meeting, to see if they are demonstrating increased confidence. Look for specific behaviors, such as maintaining eye contact, speaking clearly, or asking questions.

    • Feedback from others: Ask colleagues, friends, or family members to provide feedback on the client's confidence level before and after working with you. This can provide valuable insight into how the client's behavior and demeanor have changed over time.

  1. Career advancement: supporting clients in achieving their career goals and advancing in their profession.

  2. Stress management: teaching clients coping mechanisms to manage their stress and improve their mental health.

  3. Financial success: providing guidance to clients to reach their financial goals, such as building wealth, creating a budget, or starting a business.

  4. Relationship improvement: helping clients to improve their relationships, whether with a significant other, family members, or colleagues.

  5. Leadership development: assisting clients in developing their leadership skills and becoming more effective leaders.

  6. Goal setting: working with clients to set and achieve specific goals in various areas of their lives, such as health, career, or personal growth.

  7. Time management: teaching clients how to manage their time more efficiently and productively.

Now that you have a clear understanding of your niche and target audience, it's time to start developing your coaching program. A coaching program is a structured plan of action that guides your clients toward achieving their desired goals. It's essential to develop a signature coaching program as it establishes your brand identity and helps you stand out in the crowded online coaching industry.

How to develop a coaching program

How to develop a coaching program

Here are the steps to develop a coaching program:

  1. Research: The first step is to research your niche and audience. What challenges are they facing? What goals are they trying to achieve? This information will help you create a coaching program that is tailored to your audience's specific needs.

  2. Pre-sell your program: If you feel comfortable, pre-selling your coaching program is an effective way to test your messaging and offer. You can offer a discounted rate for the first few clients to get feedback and refine your program.

  1. Outline: After identifying your target audience's needs, it is essential to develop a rough outline for your coaching program. The program's purpose should be to guide clients from their current situation to their desired outcome. Make sure to include clear goals, milestones, and action steps.

  2. Run your first beta round: After creating a rough outline, run your first beta round and adjust the content along the way. This will help you get valuable feedback and fine-tune your program to ensure it's effective and delivers results.

  3. Keep updating your content: Finally, keep updating your content where you see fit. Your coaching program should evolve over time based on feedback from your clients and changes in your niche.

Research your audience

To create a successful coaching program, it's essential to research your audience thoroughly. You need to understand their needs, challenges, and goals to create a program that is tailored to their specific needs. Here are some ways to research your audience:

  1. Online surveys: Create online surveys to gather information about your audience's challenges and goals.

  2. Social media groups: Join social media groups related to your niche and observe what people are talking about.

  3. Customer interviews: Interview your past clients or potential clients to understand their challenges and goals.

  4. Competitor research: Research your competitors to see what types of coaching programs they offer and what their clients say about their programs.

Pre-sell your program if you feel comfortable to test your messaging and offer

If you feel comfortable, pre-selling your coaching program is an effective way to test your messaging and offer. You can offer a discounted rate for the first few clients to get feedback and refine your program. Pre-selling also helps you generate revenue early on and validate your coaching program's viability.

Plan a rough outline of the curriculum

Once you have a clear understanding of your audience's needs and have pre-sold your program, it's time to plan a rough outline of your coaching program's curriculum. Your curriculum should be designed to take your clients from where they are now to where they want to be. Make sure to include clear goals, milestones, and action steps.

Custom HTML/CSS/JAVASCRIPT

Run your first beta round and adjust the content along the way

After creating a rough outline of your coaching program, it's time to run your first beta round. A beta round is a trial period where you offer your coaching program to a limited number of clients at a reduced rate. This will help you get valuable feedback and fine-tune your program to ensure it's effective and delivers results.

Keep updating your content where necessary

To keep your program relevant and effective, it's important to consistently update your content. One way to maintain the trust and loyalty of your clients is by keeping your program current. This can involve adding new modules or lessons, revising existing content based on feedback, and staying up-to-date with industry trends and best practices. To achieve this, it is recommended to create a schedule for reviewing and revising your program.

The frequency of reviews should be determined by your needs and those of your clients. These reviews can occur quarterly, bi-annually, or annually. During these reviews, you should evaluate what is and isn't working and make any necessary adjustments. Keeping your clients informed of any program changes is crucial. You can achieve this through email updates, social media posts, or regular client check-ins.By keeping them in the loop and involving them in the process, you'll build a stronger relationship with them and increase their satisfaction with your coaching services.

Overall, the key to building a successful online coaching business is to constantly improve and refine your program based on the needs of your clients and the demands of the market. By taking the time to develop a strong program, understanding your audience, and continuously updating your content, you'll be well on your way to building a thriving coaching business.

Step 6: Determine the pricing

Importance of setting your pricing

Pricing your coaching program is a crucial step in starting your online coaching business. It can be challenging to find the right balance between charging what you're worth and making your program accessible to potential clients. Your pricing strategy can also play a role in attracting the right kind of clients and setting expectations for the level of commitment required to work with you.

How to price your program

When it comes to pricing your coaching program, there is no universal solution. However, several factors should be considered.

  1. Your target market: The type of clients you want to work with will affect your pricing. For example, if you are targeting high-level executives, you can charge a premium price, while if you are targeting students, you may need to keep your prices lower.

  2. The value you provide: Your pricing should reflect the value you provide to your clients. Think about the transformation your program offers and how that transformation will impact your clients' lives.

  3. Your experience and credentials: Your experience and credentials will also play a role in determining your pricing. If you have a long history of working in your field and have earned advanced certifications or degrees, you can charge more. Side note here, if you have been asking yourself the question: “What are the legal considerations when starting an online coaching business?” I can tell you that it is an unregulated industry and you do not need to have a degree or certification in order to coach.

  4. Your competition: Take a look at what other coaches in your niche are charging. You don't necessarily want to price yourself higher or lower than everyone else, but you should be aware of the market.

Examples of pricing strategies for coaches

There are several pricing strategies that you can consider for your coaching program:

  1. Hourly rate: This is a straightforward pricing model where you charge clients a set hourly rate. However, it can be challenging to scale your business with this model, and you may find that you are working more hours than you would like to.

  2. Package pricing: With this model, you create packages of sessions that clients can purchase. For example, you may offer a package of 10 sessions for a set price. This can make it easier to scale your business and provide more value to your clients.

  3. Subscription model: This pricing strategy involves offering ongoing coaching sessions for a set fee each month. This can be an excellent option if you want to create a steady stream of income, but it may not work for all niches.

  4. Group coaching: With this model, you work with multiple clients at once, which can make it possible to charge a lower price point. However, you will need to put in more work to create a cohesive group dynamic.

Setting the right price for your coaching program can be challenging, but with careful consideration of your target market, the value you provide, and your competition, you can find the sweet spot.

A good platform can make it easier for you to attract and retain clients, while a bad platform can lead to frustration and loss of business.

It's important to choose a platform that allows for easy expansion and customization, so you can tailor it to meet your specific needs as your coaching business grows. Most platforms out there charge more money once you start growing your email list for example. This is how they make their money. How to get more coaching clients

Why organic marketing is key when you first start out

Organic marketing is a great way to start building your coaching business without spending a lot of money on advertising. In the early stages of your coaching business, you may not have the budget to invest in expensive advertising campaigns. This is where organic marketing can be very effective.

Organic marketing refers to the process of building an audience and attracting potential clients through non-paid marketing methods such as social media, blogging, podcasting, and content marketing. By creating valuable content and sharing it on social media and other platforms, you can start building your brand and attracting potential clients to your coaching business.

The great thing about organic marketing is that it is highly targeted. You can create content that speaks directly to your ideal client and attracts them to your coaching business. Over time, as you build your brand and reputation, you can start to scale up your marketing efforts with paid advertising campaigns. But in the beginning, organic marketing is the best way to get started.

So, if you're just starting out with your coaching business, focus on creating valuable content and sharing it on social media and other platforms. Over time, you will start to build an audience and attract potential clients to your coaching business.

Facebook for organic marketing

Facebook is a highly effective social media platform for organic marketing, if not the best. Zuckerberg managed to have over 2 billion active users on the platform, which offers a massive variety of different "Ideal Customer Avatars" to engage with via its unique features.

Here are some tips for using Facebook to market your coaching business organically:

  1. Create a Facebook page for your coaching business. You will have the amazing opportunity to collect "likes" and "reviews" from previous clients on your page to establish a strong online presence. Additionally, you can connect with your audience in real-time by utilizing the broadcast feature to "go live".

  2. Post regular updates about your coaching services, including success stories, testimonials, and tips for achieving personal growth.

  3. Timely responses to comments and messages are crucial in engaging your audience. Such an approach will aid in building relationships and establishing trust with potential clients.

  4. Join relevant Facebook groups and share your expertise. This way you can connect a lot deeper with individuals who have similar interests, gather crucial market research and potentially draw in new clientele.

How to Start an Online Coaching Business

Remember, the key to successful organic marketing is consistency. By regularly posting valuable content (hot tip here: implement the 7 Pillar Content System) and engaging back with your audience once they show a reaction, again, you can build your online presence, create a connection and attract new clients over time.

How I made multiple 6 figures as an online coach in my first year in business (and you can do the same)

How I launched my course the first time

When I first started out in the online world, I sold my online course via a 5-day challenge. The challenge was free to attend. I managed to get 155 attendees signed up via organic marketing on Facebook, built a connection with the audience and delivered amazing content over the course of 5 days, with a call to action to sign up for the first “beta” round.

I sold a 6 weeks “live” coaching program for a lower price and made $6,000. Not bad considering I hadn’t even created the program. But that’s the entire point: sell before you create. Because if you don’t sell, you don’t need to waste weeks creating a product nobody wants to buy anyways.

Get results for your clients

My students actually got amazing results going through the program. One student made 8x his investment back in week 6. Another student followed our “Webinar for Coaches” strategy and converted 8% of the audience the first time running it, and 12,5% of the audience the second time running it. And this is an absolute beginner with no audience, no email list and no social media following.

How I made $28k in one month (and how you can too)

After I ran the above named program several times, I decided to turn this course into a high ticket program. This meant that I had to change the transformation which resulted in having to add more/different content.

Now, the first transformation of the 6 weeks course was “How to launch your online course or coaching program in 6 weeks” which now turned into “Scale your coaching/course business to 6 figures / year”. I had to add more strategies to the course as it takes more than just a launch to get to multiple 6 figures per year organically.

I sold this program first time successfully after I launched an online summit called “Online Course Talks”. My audience was warm and was just waiting for me to put out the right offer for them. So I did. I sent one email after the summit promotion was over, booked appointments, implemented our unique “Calls for Coaches” strategy and closed $28k over the phone, just like that.

After I onboarded my first clients into the new high ticket coaching program, I kept implementing our unique “Social Selling System '' which allowed us to add 100 leads per week to our email list and simultaneously book appointments.

And this is how you can quickly reach multiple 6 figure years without spending a dime on ads.
